Good grief…to answer would be a mouthful but I’ll try. A lot of flaky folk have launched themselves as ‘food critics’ regardless of whether they have a culinary frame of reference and by the same token, ‘food writing’ has become the refuge of many an ardent eater yet talentless writer. So, the good news is that especially on the internet, there’s no barrier to entry. Just start your own blog (as I have done) and fire away. If you want to get published (like, on paper) and you have zero experience or qualifications, a well-written blog could serve as a great online reference. Good blogs often lead to print work. Apart from writing skill, knowledge is key. While you sharpen that pencil, attend as many wine tastings, food shows and cookery courses as you can afford. And most of all, enjoy the journey!
